These are “general directories.” They’re not specific to any vertical niche (lawyers, senior care providers, dentists, longshoremen, etc.), but are still valuable in terms of establishing link popularity and authority.

Most experts agree that these general directories have recently been assigned a lower “authority value” by Google. This is geek-speak for saying that, since any business owner can simply sign up for these directories, listings on them should carry less value, as they aren’t the same as a “real” citation (an actual person linking to your site/ content).

 

Are General Directories Still Relevant?

Yes! To a certain degree, that is. We at Cobrametrics still take the time to create these listings for local businesses for the following reasons (and recommend you consider them, too):

• Most local businesses suffer from LBLS (low back link syndrome). In many markets, having 200–300 directory links can place you above your link-starved competitors.
• Building profiles on these sites does not take any real time and often at zero cost.
• Having links on these directories isn’t a bad thing to do, in that it won’t (as of the date of this writing) hurt your SEO and general online mojo.
• Google and other search engines still place trust in a few of the top general directories (dmoz and Yahoo!) and pull content from them to use elsewhere.

 

Tips to Remember When Creating Directory Listings:

• Always use your top keywords in descriptions and anchor text.
• Don’t forget to use geographical terms in your anchor text and descriptions. Even though these are general directories, including local phrases (e.g., “Seattle Divorce Lawyer”) will help your overall rankings and authority for these terms, even in Google places and local search!
• Study your competitors’ backlinks and find out which directories they’re listed in.
• Check back to ensure your listing has been published.
